The crime novel in British literature and culture has long held a significant place. Since the beginnings of the genre many critically acknowledged authors have, with more or less ardor and success, tried themselves within the field, oftentimes combining crime fiction with the so called high literature. The scope of its historical development exemplifies the significance of this genre, as do the many subgenres determined by the presence of varied aspects of crime fiction. During the 20th century the crime novel has gradually assumed the serious role of the interpreter of the human condition and psyche, and has become the indicator of social and individual states of being. Thus it has completed a major shift into the main and critically acclaimed stream of contemporary British literature through unique creative poetics of individual authors. This dissertation represents a research into the key aspects of genre development both diachronically and synchronically. It strives to map the journey the crime novel has made from popular fiction with sensationalist overtones and often clumsy plotting to a serious genre dedicated to the analysis of criminal motivations, the aberrations of human consciousness and an almost documentary exploration of evidence leading to the solving of crimes which the contemporary author views primarily as a consequence instead of the cause. The work takes a close look at the genre's formal development and its acquisition of structural complexity. It explores the diversification of literary expression and reconstructs the evolutionary continuity of crime fiction based on a detailed structural and narratological analysis of the following genre aspects: novel structure, the thematic and motivational layer, narrative techniques, the detective figure, plot development and significance of the puzzle plot and, finally, the readers' horizon of expectations. Kriminalistički roman je u britanskoj književnosti odavno pronašao i čvrsto zauzeo značajno mesto. Od samog nastanka ovog žanra, veliki broj priznatih pisaca se sa manjim ili većim žarom i uspehom okušao na ovom polju, često kombinujući kriminalistički žanr sa takozvanom ozbiljnom književnošću. Na značaj ovog žanra ukazuje bogatstvo njegovog istorijskog razvoja, kao i veliki broj podžanrova koje određuje zastupljenost različitih aspekata samog kriminalističkog romana. Tokom dvadesetog veka roman kriminalističkog žanra preuzimao je sve više ozbiljnu ulogu tumača ljudske svesti i indikatora društvenih i individualnih stanja, prelazeći tako, kroz jedinstvenu stvaralačku poetiku pojedinih pisaca, u glavni i kritički priznati tok moderne britanske književnosti. Ovaj rad predstavlja, na dijahronijskom i sinhronijskom planu, istraživanje ključnih aspekata razvoja žanra kriminalističkog romana koji je prešao put od popularne literature sa senzacionalističkim pristupom i neveštim zapletom, do ozbiljnog žanra posvećenog analizi motiva zločina i aberacije ljudske svesti, kao i skoro dokumentarnog proučavanja dokaza koji vode do rasvetljavanja kriminalnog dela koje moderni pisac pre svega sagledava kao posledicu a ne uzrok. U radu se razmatra formalni razvoj i usložnjavanje, odnosno diversifikacija književnog izraza dok se evolutivni kontinuitet tradicije kriminalističkog romana rekonstruiše na osnovu detaljne strukturalne i naratološke analize sledećih aspekata žanra: strukture romana, tematsko-motivskog sklopa, narativnih postupaka, figure detektiva, strukture zapleta i značaja koncepta zagonetke, i na kraju, horizonta očekivanja čitalačke publike. Pored strukturalnog i naratološkog pristupa, u interpretaciji građe koriste se ključni teorijski uvidi kulturalnih studija i teorije recepcije...
