The theoretical framework of the thesis includes two major discourses: the first covers the attitudes about gender relations, divided roles and spheres of influence, as well as the corresponding methods to cope with the women’s issue in Serbia in the 20th century; while the second is the national discourse concerning the relationship between the woman’s role and the nation in the process of women’s emancipation resulting from these methods. The cohesive element linking the two main discourses with dress culture and fashion are femininity models developed throughout the 20th century. Femininity models are cultural constructs based on apparent changes in dress culture determined by women’s social status, scope and degree of achieved and manifested/consumed civil rights, women’s role in building the sex/gender identity and its cultural meaning. Drawing on comparisons with the ideal models as defined in contemporary American and British museological research since the mid-1970s, we seek to explain the essential characteristics of femininity models identified in Serbia, their fashion context and roots in historical and industrial sense and, particularly the social constructs defining them. The identified femininity models are analyzed in chronological sequence. The starting point is set to the late 19th century because we seek to put into better relief both the continuity and specific characteristics of the development of dress culture in Serbia in the 20th century. The presentation of the identified models is supplied with specific value judgements and descriptions. The following bodies of materials have been used in our research: studies on the fundamental characteristics of 20th-century fashion; selected women’s magazines in Serbia and photography, whose main function is to delineate the social context for the proposed femininity models. The aim of the analysis of the identified femininity models in Serbia in the 20th century is to trace the formation process of the modern woman, her emancipation, changing gender roles arising from women’s activism and their involvement in the public sphere, as well as the main lines of modernization in Serbia in the 20th century. The subversive character of fashion exemplified in body exposure and sexual freedoms in the period immediately following World War I and its subversive agency in the rigid Communist system in the period immediately after World War II are also analyzed in this study. The degree of women’s self-fulfilment and their role in creating a permissive society and the corresponding gender relations in Serbia should contribute to a better understanding of the current situation in Serbian society...

Теоријски оквир теме обухвата два основна дискурса: први, ставове о родним односима, подељеним улогама и сферама утицаја, као и припадајућем начину решавања женског питања у Србији у двадесетом веку; и други, национални дискурс о спрези улоге жене и нације у тако оствареном процесу еманципације. Кохезиони елемент два основна дискурса са културом одевања и модом представљају модели женствености развијани кроз двадесети век. Модели женствености представљају културне конструкције засноване на видљивим изменама у одевању и дефинисане социјалним/друштвеним статусом/положајем жене, степеном остварених и исказаних/реално конзумираних грађанских права, основном улогом жене у конструкцији полног/родног идентитета и његовим културним значењем. У поређењу са идеалним моделима дефинисаним кроз савремена америчка и британска музеолошка истраживања која су спроведена од половине седамдесетих година двадесетог века, наш циљ је да утврдимо основне карактеристике модела женствености уочених у Србији, њихове историјске и индустријске модне оквире и подлоге и, посебно, друштвене конструкције које дефинишу ове моделе. Уочене моделе женствености посматрамо континуирано и хронолошки. Полазиште је смештено у крај деветнаестог века како би континуитет, али и специфичности развоја културе одевања у Србији у двадесетом веку били што боље истакнути. Такође, специфична вредносна и описна опредељења прате тако уочене моделе женствености. За истраживања су коришћени следећи корпуси материјала: основне одлике моде у двадесетом веку, одабрана женска штампа у Србији и фотографија чија је основна функција друштвеног контекста/амбијента за утврђивање предложених модела женствености. Разматрање уочених моделе женствености у Србији у двадесетом веку треба да укаже на процес стварања модерне жене, њене еманципације, промене родних улога насталих на активизму жена и њиховом укључивању у јавни простор, као и на опште токове модернизације у Србији у двадесетом веку. Субверзивност моде исказана у испољавању тела и сексуалних слобода у периоду одмах после Првог светског рата и субверзивно деловање моде у ригидном, комунистичком систему у периоду одмах после Другог светског рата, такође су предмет наше интерпретације. Степен остварености жене, њена улога у стварању пермисивног друштва у Србији, као и припадајући родни односи, треба да допринесу разумевању данашње позиције српског друштва уопште...
