Opis (eng)

Abstract The subject of the chapter is to provide an insight into the features of the educational systems of former socialist countries, as well as the changes that occurred in education during the transition. The chapter gives an overview of the expansion of education and the organization of the educational system after the Second World War among the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. It is shown that educational policies evolved to enhance access and reduce inequalities by extending compulsory education while making upper secondary education highly strati ed. The central planning with signi cant state intervention was to a great extent present in higher education. The reforms that took place in education during the transition changed the organization and the relevance of different educational levels, promoting higher education at the cost of vocational education. The chapter also provides an overview of how the relationship between education and the labor market changed after the transition, with a summary of studies that give insight into how the education premium changed. The problem of overeducation is also pointed out, especially in the period promptly after the transition.
