Abstract: Is the teaching profession in crisis? Fewer and fewer successful students enroll at teacher training universities; the status of a teacher is los- ing its social and moral value, and teachers are faced with ever-increasing demands, expectations, and responsibilities. In search of an answer to this question, this paper aims to perform a comparative analysis of the teach- ing profession status (ISCED1 level) in the countries of the Western Bal- kans (Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedo- nia). For the categories of comparative analysis, three criteria were taken into account: evaluation of teachers, the possibility of advancement in the profession, and the welfare that the profession provides. National reports of educational authorities and data from the database of the European Edu- cation and Culture Executive Agency (https://www.eacea.ec.europa.eu) were used as sources for data collection. The analysis established that in the aforementioned countries, the obligation to evaluate teachers is estab- lished by regulation, mainly to improve work and advancement in the pro- fession. The income level of teachers indicates a very low material status of this profession in all analyzed countries. It is observed that teachers are burdened with the high and long-term demands of competent bodies. In the conclusion, recommendations for improvement are presented (revi- son of the evaluation and promotion system, improvement of the social competencies of teachers and providing greater autonomy to teachers in certain аspects).

Апстракт: Да ли је учитељска професија у кризи? Све мање успешних ученика уписује учитељске факултете, статус учитеља губи друштвену и моралну вредност, а пред учитеље се постављају све већи захтеви, очекивања и одговорности. У потрази за одговором на постављено питање, циљ овог рада био је извршити компаративну ана- лизу статуса учитељске професије (ISCED1 ниво) у земљама Западног Балкана (Србија, Црна Гора, Босна и Херцеговина и Северна Македо- нија). За категорије компаративне анализе узета су у обзир три кри- теријума: вредновање учитеља, могућност напредовања у професији и углед учитељске професије. Као извори за прикупљање података коришћена је национална законска регулатива из ове области и подаци из базе Европске агенције за образовање и културу (https://www.eacea. ec.europa.eu). Анализом је утврђено да је у наведеним земљама про- писом утврђена обавеза вредновања учитеља, претежно с циљем уна- пређења рада и напредовања у професији. Ниво прихода учитеља указује на веома низак материјални статус ове професије у свим ана- лизираним земљама. Уочава се оптерећеност учитеља високим и дуго- рочним захтевима надлежних тела. У закључку се износе препоруке за унапређење (преиспитати систем вредновања и напредовања, уна- предити социјалне компетенције учитеља и пружити већу аутономију учитељима у појединим аспектима).
