The significance of performance measurement in managing humanitarian logistics operations
Abstract: The importance of humanitarian logistics has increased in the last two decades due to the increase in the number of people living in disaster-prone areas. Consequently, the humanitarian supply chain and humanitarian logistics are very complex. The task of humanitarian logistics is to provide all beneficiaries with the items and commodities required to survive, improve health, and return to normal life. Different phases of disaster management are characterized by various challenges. Thus, after the catastrophic event, the first reaction is made by domestic or international suppliers who provide help by sending urgent relief commodities such as water, food, medicine, and shelter. In order to serve people in need in the most effective and efficient way humanitarian activities measurement is needed. Numerous kinds of research suggested success and performance indicators for humanitarian logistics. The starting point of the improvement process is a performance measuring and monitoring. Then, the observed poor activities can be improved. This paper aims to point out the significance of success factors for effectiveness and efficiency of humanitarian logistics. This paper consists of four parts. The paper findings show that success factors have a key role in performance improvement. Hence, the overall improvement of humanitarian operations relies on well-defined success factors and their constant monitoring.
