Abstract: This essay considers the definitionof a work of art, as formulated by the American philosopher Arthur Danto. Danto develops this definitionbased on the argument of non-differentiation: if there are two objects in front of us, only one of which is a work of art, and the two objects cannot be differentiated by their perceptible qualities, then it is necessary for them to be differentiated by non-perceptible qualities. An excellent example of this relationship would be the Brillo Boxes displayed at an exhibition of Andy Warhol in 1964. According to Danto, in order to consider an object a work of art, it must (1) speak about something and (2) embody its own meaning. This definitionis wide enough to encompass both traditional and radically innovative works of art (e.g. ready-mades or conceptual art); however, on the other hand, in view of the fact that it favours the semantic dimension, it leaves open the question of differentiating between a work of art and other inter-perceptible objects.

Апстракт: У овом огледу се разматра одређење уметничког дела које је формулисао амерички филозоф Артур Данто (Danto). До тог одређења Данто долази аргументом о неразликовању: уколико се пред нама налазе два предмета, од којих је само један уметничко дело, а предмети се не разликују по својим перцептабилним својствима, онда је нужно да се разликују по својствима која нису перцептабилна. Узоран пример за овај однос дају Brillo Boxes са једне изложбе Ендија Ворхола (Warhol) из 1964. По Дантоу, да би неки предмет био уметничко дело, он мора да (1) говори о нечему и (2) отеловљује своје значење. Ово одређење је довољно широко да обухвати како традиционална, тако и радикално иновативна уметничка дела (нпр. ready-mades или концептуалну уметност), али, са друге стране, пошто повлашћује значењску димензију, оставља отвореним питање о разликовању уметничког дела од других интерпретабилних предмета.
