ABSTRACT In this paper, we deal with the symbolism of the sea in the poetry and travel prose of DesankaMaksimović. It is used as a fluid „mirror of the soul”, a medium for expressing longings, forebodings, disappointments or premonitions of finality. The sea is perceived as a somewhat abstract landscape, „infinity without sprouting”, cleansed of the earthly, therefore it is associated with the absolute. Its opaque bottom is often associated with the subconscious. The second part of the article is dedicated to travel prose: the beauty of the seascape is so great that it gives rise to the thought of the Creator as the most perfect artist who creates extremes and unites them in supreme harmony. However, even in the coastal areas, writers much prefer to explore the bays and heights above the sea on foot, enjoying sudden discoveries and interpretations of the unmistakable language of insects, the floral and ornithological world, and the world of water. An important symbol of Montenegro and the lyrical hero of Maksimović’s poetry is Petar Petrović Njegoš, so in her poems the writer establishes a lyrical dialogue with his conclusions about human nature and destiny.

САЖЕТАК: У раду се бавимо симболиком мора у поезији и путописној прози Десанке Максимовић. Као простор велике лепоте и бес- краја, оно представља „огледало душе”, медијум за исказивање чежњи, слутњи, разочарања или слутње коначности. Његово непрозирно дно често се повезује са подсвесним. Опажа се у извесној мери као апстрактан пејзаж, „бескрај без клијања”, очишћен од земаљског, па се доводи у везу са апсолутом. Лепо- та морског пејзажа у путописним чланцима толика је да рађа мисао о Творцу као најсавршенијем уметнику. Ипак, и у при- морју књижевница радије одабира усамљеничко пешачко ис- траживање увала и висова над морем, уживајући у изненадним открићима и тумачењу немуштог језика кукаца, флоралног и орнитолошког света и света воде. Значајан симбол Црне Горе и лирски јунак Максимовићкине поезије јесте Петар Петровић Његош, па у својим песмама списатељица успоставља лирски дијалог са његовим закључцима о људској природи и судбини.
