Ова дисертација истражује могућности коришћења националног интереса за идентификовање, опис и објашњење националне безбедности, односно утврђивање сазнајно-експланаторног потенцијала националног интереса за изучавање политике националне безбедности Србије. Ради остваривања научног циља дескрипције у дисертацији су представљене и описане различите концептуализације националног интереса у оквиру теоријских приступа наука безбедности, као и кључни елементи који конституишу овај концепт. Други научни циљ јесте научно објашњење начина на који национални интереси утичу на формулисање и реализацију политике националне безбедности. У циљу добијања одговора на постављена истраживачка питања и реализације дефинисаних истраживачких циљева, у дисертацији се примењују сазнања теорије реализма, неолибералног институционализма и социјалног конструктивизма, док је методолошки оквир истраживања укључио примену критичког прегледа литературе, анализу докумената, анализу садржаја званичних саопштења и методу сценарија. Квалитативно истраживање обухвата студију случаја, политику националне безбедности Републике Србије која се истражује посредством употребе националног интереса. На тај начин, свеобухватно и дубински анализирана је и објашњена политика националне безбедности Србије, услови у којима се конституише и реализује, модели њеног редефинисања и начини операционализације; идентификовани су актери који учествују у том процесу, и испитивана је рационалност доступних инструмената који се користе за њену реализацију.

This dissertation explores the possibilities of using national interest to identify, describe and explain national security, that is, determining the cognitive and explanatory potential of national interest for the study of Serbia's national security policy. To achieve the scientific goal of the description, various conceptualizations of national interest are presented and described within the theoretical approaches of security sciences, as well as the key elements that constitute this concept. The second, scientific goal is a scientific explanation of how national interests influence the formulation and implementation of national security policy. To obtain answers to the research questions and the realization of the defined research goals, the knowledge of the theory of realism, neoliberal institutionalism, and social constructivism аре applied in the dissertation, while the methodological framework of the research included the application of a critical literature review, document analysis, analysis of the content of official announcements and the scenario method. Qualitative research includes a case study, the national security policy of the Republic of Serbia, which is investigated through the use of national interest. In this way, Serbia's national security policy was comprehensively and deeply analyzed and explained, as well as the conditions under which it is constituted and realized, models of its redefinition and ways of operationalization; the actors participating in that process are identified, and the rationality of the available instruments used for its realization was examined.
