Trust, Friendship and Politics in the Old Master Market : Duveen and the State Art Collection of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia
Abstract: This chapter aims to shed more light, not only on the role of Duveen in the foundation of the State Art Collection of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (SAC) and on the rarely discussed collaboration and friendship between Joseph Duveen and Prince Paul of Yugoslavia (Pavle Karađorđević). Their successful “joint venture” shaped the SAC and Prince Paul’s personal collection, and helped to establish the foundation of the Museum of Modern Art in Belgrade. The SAC, comprising European and Yugoslav works of art, had a rich and distinctive history, which is an integral, albeit neglected, part of the European cultural history of the twentieth century. The state collection was founded in 1929 with the proclamation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and the last works were added to it in the late 1970s, before the death of President Tito. Although by its contents and its historical importance the SAC forms a notable part of the European and Yugoslav cultural heritage, this collection has never been fully researched and remained virtually unknown, not only outside Yugoslavia, but even within its borders. A complete catalogue of the SAC fine arts collection was printed only in 2014, finally making its content available to a wider audience.
