Апстракт Овај рад анализира серију Кућа од карата (House of Cards, 2013-2018) и истоимену британску трилогију (1990, 1992, 1995), на којој је америчка серија делимично заснована, као апропријацију Шекспирове историјске драме Ричард III и трагедије Макбет. Циљ нам је да испитамо интер- текстуалне везе које серије остварују са Шекспиром, као и оне које америчка серија успоставља са својом британском претходницом, како бисмо додатно расветлили питања политике и морала, које и једна и друга серија обрађују у различитим, а и по сродним контекстима. Поред цитата и тематско-мотивских веза, покушаћемо да докажемо да се веза са Шекспиром успоставља и преко самог поступка пробијања четвртог зида и директног обраћања публици.

Abstract This paper analyses Netflix TV series House of Cards (2013–2018) and the British trilogy of the same title (1990, 1992, 1995) as appropriations of Shakespeare’s history play King Richard III and tragedy Macbeth. The analogy between Richard III and the TV shows is better grounded than the one with Macbeth. Frank Underwood and Francis Urquhart, unlike Macbeth and other tragic heroes, do not have strong inner conflict. Both are, as Richard himself, charming and witty machiavellists trying to seduce the audience by breaking the fourth wall. Francis’ wife Elizabeth could be understood as a Lady Macbeth figure, though Claire Underwood is a more complex character, being more similar to Macbeth himself than to his wife. The BBC series cites Richard III directly several times, while the American version makes no explicit links. In addition, there is also a formal technique which strongly connects House of Cards with Shakespeare, namely direct addressing: Richard III begins with the protagonist’s soliloquy, as do the Netflix and the BBC series. It is also the case with Michael Dobbs’s novel House of Cards, which both series are based on. Unlike Sex and the City, Modern Family, Fleabag and other series that owe direct addressing to television hybridization of genres, House of Cards appropriates this technique from the famous history play. From Shakespeare to House of Cards, the vision of politics is being more and more pessimistic, culminating with the Netflix series, which reflects a big crisis of democracy in Western societies, leaving us with no hope; in other words, with no Richmond in the end.
