Opis (eng)

Summary: The debate about the iconography of the line of Serbian rulers in the church of the Orahovica Monastery, painted in 1594, is based on the results of earlier research, which identiied the depicted characters and initially positioned them in the current trends of fresco painting of the second half of the XVI century. he ideology of the revived Peć Patriarchy that had powerful reverberations throughout the second half of the XVI cen-tury, imposed itself as the starting point in analysing the cause of this speciically con-ceived presentation , which has no real parallels and which includes the images of the Nemanjić and the Lazarević rulers and, we assume, all of the irst twelve leaders of the Serbian Church.he assumption put forward already in early research projects was that Orahovica was the Metropolitan See of Požega. It is very diicult to reconstruct the history of the Požega Metropolis, which was most probably founded ater the revival in Peć in 1577 and had jurisdiction over the many Orthodox Christian settlers in Slavonia, and nowa-days it mainly relies on information found in the earliest manuscripts of the Orahovica Monastery, which were re-written during the last two decades of the XVI century, and on news about the Požega metropolitans in Austrian records of that time. Fresh conirmation regarding the status of Orahovica as a cathedral church was obtained by analysing the painted ensembles on the columns in the church naos, but also of the now lost frescoes in the narthex, which presented the standing images of members of the house of Nemanjić. he texts of genealogies and yearbooks are viewed as a probable source of the iconographic concept of the bloodline, the choice of depic-ted characters and the manner of linking up the two families of rulers, the Nemanjići and the Lazarevići. hese sources also support the appearance of bust portraits of the church prelates, as well as the presentations of the apostles and venerable saints in the lower zone of the northeastern column. he ideological basis developed ater the recon-struction of the Patriarchy also provides a framework for other aspects of the iconograp hic ensembles in the naos of Orahovica - the traditional, corresponding link between the bloodline of sanctiied Serbs with that of Jesse of the Old Testament, painted on the southeastern column, and for the presentations of the Balkan anchorites - John of Rila, Prohor of Pčinj, Joachim of Sarandapor and Gabriel of Lesnovo on the facets of the northwestern sub-dome pillar. he visualisation of ideas about the Serbian Church as the sole spiritual and political leader of the Orthodox Serbs in the Turkish Empire had special signiicance in supporting the rights and aspirations of the Metropolitan of Požega, the head of the newly-formed eparchy on the northwestern fringe of the Orthodox Christian world.
