Opis (eng)

Doctoral dissertation "Yugoslavia and Bulgaria 1941‒1945: Between conflict andalliance" is based on unpublished archival materials stored in the Archives of Yugoslavia, the MilitaryArchives in Belgrade, the Diplomatic Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic ofSerbia, the State Archives of Serbia, the Historical Archives of Belgrade, the State Archives of theRepublic of North Macedonia, the Central State Archives in Sofia, the State Military HistoricalArchives in Veliki Trnovo, as well as in numerous regional archives in Bulgaria. In addition tounpublished archival materials, the work is based on published documents, diaries and memoirliterature, press and periodicals, and relevant domestic and foreign literature. The main goal of the dissertation is a comprehensive overview of the relations between Yugoslaviaand Bulgaria during the Second World War. Written on a thematic-chronological basis, the workcovers the period from the beginning of the negotiations for the accession of Yugoslavia and Bulgariato the Axis Powers and the beginning of the German aggression in the Balkans in 1940/1941 until thecoming to power of new political actors in Yugoslavia and Bulgaria and the end of the Second WorldWar in 1944/1945. The complex and complicated course of events in the Second World Warimposed, in addition to the basic one, other different research objectives. The issue of the Bulgarianoccupation of parts of Yugoslavia in the period 1941‒1944 was analyzed in particular. Its characterand intensity appeared in various destructive forms, from Bulgarianization carried out through variouspropaganda and educational institutions to the war crimes against humanity. The Bulgarianoccupation was specific because of the dual role it had on the territory of Yugoslavia, so specialattention was paid to that issue, as well as to various other similar issues related to the army, economy, culture and society. The relations between the two countries, as well as the Bulgarian occupation of parts of Yugoslavia, isimpossible to see without an insight into the actions of the great powers. Thus, the involvement of theUSA, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, Germany and Italy in this matter represented another goal ofthe research. The influence of the great powers was particularly reflected in the activities of theRoyalist and National Liberation movement and the Yugoslav government-in-exile. The analysis ofthe action of these factors in the context of the relations between Yugoslavia and Bulgaria is also oneof the objectives of the research. The final phase of the Second World War brought a change in thebalance of power in the military and political sense, as well as new research goals. With the coming topower of the pro-Soviet-oriented governments in Yugoslavia and Bulgaria in the final months of thewar, the conditions were created for the two neighboring countries to start again on the path ofrapprochement. In this sense, special attention was given to the analysis of the joint action of the twocountries in the military, cultural, economic and diplomatic fields.
