This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the life and scientific work ofacademician Milorad Ekmečić based on available historical sources and relevanthistoriographical literature. He is one of the most prominent, most prolific and most influentialSerbian intellectuals of the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. He issurvived by over 300 bibliographic items, among which are anthological works of timelessvalue. They were written mainly on the basis of unpublished material from domestic and foreignarchives, with the consultation with credible traces of the past in the form of travelogues,testimonies of contemporaries, old manuscripts, church books, monastery chronicles and verifiedresults of critical historiography. He did not limit his research to tight chronological frameworksand narrow geographical boundaries, nor did he hesitate to speak openly about wider social,state, national and geopolitical problems. Observed as a scientist, researcher, teacher, pedagogueand public figure, Ekmečić is a person of almost renaissance characteristics. Extraordinarilyeducated, with great knowledge and extremely wide interest, he managed to reflect himself invarious historiographical and journalistic expressions. Therefore, we have tried to process hisdiverse life and scientific opus through ten separate thematic units, respecting the strict usage ofhistorical methodology. The broadest bibliographic basis of our manuscript consists of Ekmečić'stexts themselves. In addition to them, there are unpublished materials from the Archives ofSANU and the Archives of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade, as well as ahuge number of valid titles from periodicals, press and memoirs. During our research work, weused the classical historical method, in consultation with the methods of other related socialsciences and humanities.

У раду се на основу доступних историјских извора и релевантне историографскелитературе врши свеобухватна анализа животног пута и научног дела академикаМилорада Екмечића. Реч је о једном од најистакнутијих, најплоднијих и најутицајнијихсрпских интелектуалаца друге половине 20. и почетка 21. века. Иза себе је оставио преко300 библиографских јединица, међу којима се налазе антологијска дела непролазневредности. Она су писана углавном на бази необјављене грађе из домаћих и иностранихархива, уз консултовање веродостојних трагова прошлости у облику путописа,сведочанстава савременика, старих рукописа, црквених књига, манастирских хроника ипроверених резултата критичке историографије. Своја истраживања није ограничаваотесним хронолошким оквирима и уским географским међама. Није се либио отвореноговорити и о ширим друштвеним, државним, националним и геополитичким проблемима.Посматран као научник, истраживач, наставник, педагог и јавни делатник, Екмечићпредставља личност готово ренесансних карактеристика. Изванредно образован, огромногзнања и крајње широког интересовања, успевао се огледати у разним историографским ипублицистичким изразима. Стога смо његов разуђени животни и научни опус покушалиобрадити кроз десет посебних тематских целина, поштујући строге узусе историјскеметодологије. Најширу библиографску основу нашег рукописа чине сами Екмечићевитекстови. Поред њих, ту је необјављена грађа из Архива САНУ и Архива Филозофскогфакултета Универзитета у Београду, као и огроман број валидних наслова из периодике,штампе и мемоарске литературе. Приликом нашег истраживачког рада користили смокласичан историјски метод, уз консултовање метода других сродних друштвенохуманистичких наука
