The role of extracurricular activities in improving the educational function of primary school
Abstract: The paper presents the results of a research that aimed to examine the opinions of teachers and students of the final grade of primary school on the role of extracurricular activities in improving the education function of school. The research was conducted on a sample of 556 participants, 247 of which were teachers and 309 were primary school students in the Republic of Serbia. Descriptive research method was used in this research, as well as a Questionnaire for examining the opinions of teachers and students on the effect of extracurricular activities in achieving the education role of primary school. Frequencies and percentages, mean with corresponding standard deviation were used as statistical procedures. Differences were tested using Student's t-test. The obtained research results show a more detailed picture of extracurricular activities and their benefit to improving the education role of school from the perspective of teachers and students of older school age in primary schools in the Republic of Serbia. As an insufficiently used type of school's educational activity, extracurricular activities require teacher support in terms of greater engagement, accessibility, involvement and affirmation of students in order to provide conditions for improving the education role of school. By taking part in extracurricular activities, students decide to spend part of their free time at school. School should recognize that as a possibility for additional educational activities. Research findings can serve for a deeper analysis of this very important pedagogical issue.
