У потражи за постхладноратовским raison d'être, НАТО се окренуо новим изазовима безбедности и изградњи нових улога које су довеле до трансформације његовог идентитета. Како је постојећа литература углавном фокусирана на разлоге, правце и политичке последице те трансформације, ова дисертација за циљ има да објасни процес трансформације идентитета, и то кроз улогу актера у решавању хуманитарних криза. То се чини ослањањем на основна полазишта теорије идентитета улоге и Гофманове драматуршке акције. У дисертацији се тврди да процесом реинтерпретације значења и представа НАТО изграђује одређене праксе, а њихов континуитет чини да оне постану део идентитета ове организације. У процесу истраживања коришћене су две методе за прикупљање података: критичка анализа дискурса, како би се утврдило како дискурси стварају значења и представе, како утичу на друштвене праксе које из тога произилазе, а онда и дефиницију онога шта/ко неко јесте, као и метода студије случаја, како би се на примерима контекстуализовао процес уоквиривања хуманитарних операција и показали одрживост и континуитет уоквиривања кроз време. Резултати истраживања показали су да је НАТО учешће у решавању хуманитарних криза ставио у оквире својих најважнијих задатака, а то су управљање кризама и сарадња у безбедности; да је своје капацитете и процедуре прилагодио потребама решавања хуманитарних криза; да је учешће у решавању криза рационализовао позивањем на моралне, нормативне и разлоге солидарности који су у основи вредносног система НАТО-а. Резултати су показали и да је улога актера у решавању хуманитарних криза континуирана активност која је у функционалном и реторичком смислу обележила период од оснивања Евроатлантског координационог центра за одговор на катастрофе (1998) па до окончања операције у Либији 2011. године, и да је данас саставни део идентитета НАТО-а, заједно са улогом одбрамбеног актера

In quest of the post-Cold War raison d'être, NATO widened its field of interest to new security challenges and new roles causing profound identity transformation. Bearing in mind that the existing literature has predominantly focused on reasons, courses and political consequences of identity transformation this thesis seeks to explain the process of identity transformation based on the role of actor in humanitarian field. It does so by relying on insights from role identity theory and Goffman’s dramaturgical action. The thesis argues that NATO, by the process of reinterpretation of meanings and representatons, structures certain practices, and the continuity of their performance makes them an integral part of NATO identity. Research design includes critical discourse analysis, (in order to explain how discourses produce meanings and representations, how they influence social practices, and eventually how they influence the definition of who one is) and case studies (in order to contextualize the process of framing of humanitarian operations, and show sustainability and continuity of framing efforts over time in specific NATO operations). The results of the research show that NATO has identified humanitarian operations as part of its strategic tasks; it further has adapted its capacities and procedures in order to respond the needs of humanitarian crises demands; and finally, NATO legitimized its actorness in humanitarian operations by invoking moral, normative and the reasons of solidarity. The results also show that actorness in resolving humanitarian crises is NATO's continuous activity that marked, functionally and rhetorically, the period between the establishment of the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Center (1998) and the end of the operation in Libya in 2011, which makes it now integral part of NATO's identity, along with its defense role identity
