Приликом савршавања појединих Светих тајни и свештених обреда Цркве, употребљавају се конкретни елементи материје. У том смислу, богослужбена употреба материје представља неизоставни сегмент светотајинског живота Цркве. Употребом освећених елемената материје у Светим тајнама, остварује се освећење човека. Својеврсно полазиште за темељније разумевање освећујуће улоге материје огледа се у чињеници да је човек створен од материје и да не може постојати мимо ње. Будући да је створен као свештеник и владар свега што је приведено у постојање, човек је призван да читаву творевину приноси Богу ради њеног спасења. У свештеној историји Старог Завета материја је имала удела у остварењу конкретних догађаја. Посредством материје Бог је указивао своју милост према богоизабраном народу. Паралелно са тим, елементи материје су употребљавани у оквиру богоустановљеног старозаветног богослужења. У контексту остварења домостроја спасења у личности Оваплоћенога Сина Божијег, пројављен је вишеструки значај материје. Крштењем Господа Исуса Христа у Јордану, освећена је природа водâ, те су воде постале извор освећења човека. Установљењем Божанствене Евхаристије, људскоме роду је дарована тајинствена храна живота у Христу. Литургички и патристички извори садрже драгоцена сведочанства о освећујућем дејству материје у светотајинском животу Цркве. Освећујућа улога материје проучавана је на примеру Свете тајне крштења, миропомазања, Божанствене Евхаристије, јелеосвећења, водоосвећења, као и осталих свештенорадњи у којима се користе вода, хлеб, вино, уље и свето миро.

When administering certain sacraments and sacred rites of the Church, concrete elements of matter are utilized. In this sense, the liturgical usage of matter represents an inevitable segment of the sacramental life of the Church. Through the usage of sanctified elements of matter in sacraments, the sanctification of man is achieved. The starting point for a more thorough comprehension of the sanctifying role of matter is reflected in the fact that man is created out of matter and cannot exist outside of. Since he was created as minister and ruler over everything brought into existence, man is called to, for the sake of its salvation, offer the entirety of creation to God. In the sacred history of the Old Testament matter played a role in the fulfillment of concrete events. Through the mediation of matter, God attested His mercy for the chosen people. Simultaneously, elements of matter were utilized within the Old Testament liturgical tradition. In the context of the fulfillment of the economy of salvation in the person of the Incarnate Son of God, the multifaceted significance of matter came into light. Through the baptism of the Lord Jesus Christ in Jordan, the nature of waters was sanctified, and thus waters became the source of the sanctification of man. Through the institutionalization of Divine Eucharist, the sacramental nourishment of life in Christ was bestowed upon mankind. Liturgical and patristic sources contain invaluable testimonies of the sanctifying effect of matter in the sacramental life of the Church. The sanctifying role of matter was studied on examples of Baptism, Chrismation, Divine Eucharist, the Anointing, Sanctification of waters, as well as other sacramental activities including water, bread, wine, oil and holy myrrh.
