Research in this study is focused on spatial-functional impact of central settlements as the carrier of sustainable development of the Toplica District, on the transformation of the space in their environment. Contemporary processes of industralization, urbanization, deagrarianization, the polarization and globalization contribute socio-economic transformation of the observed space as well as the creation of new carrier of functional relationships in space. The basic part of the study includes the theoretical and methodological approach and explanations of the origin, evolution and genesis of settlements, as well as the history of studying the observed problems. The creation of the first cities and the different theories about their origins go back very far into the past. The evolution of cities originally designed to function with great spiritual impact of economic and social activities through a number of non-agrarian functions that constitute the main content of the urban centers of gravity, contributes to the development of the central functions of settlements. Towns with its own influences enrich the network of surrounding settlements, strengthen their mutual relations and create a whole functional settlement system of one area , or the gravity of the urban core. By dividing the functions of the primary, secondary and tertiary, the basis and types of settlements are created by functional criteria according to the type of economic activity and the primary content in them. Geographic location of the Toplica District, and municipalities in Toplica with municipal centers of gravity are very interesting area to explore. Interaction of various functions, and characteristics of natural resources, vertical and horizontal separations of geomorphological forms, is very complex and heterogeneous demographic picture and created a network of settlements, represents a space, or settlement system as a model and methodological basis for further studies and perspectives, or planning the future development of the network of settlements in the municipalities of Toplica region...

Истраживање у овом раду фокусирано је на просторно-функцијски утицај централних насеља, као носилаца одрживог развоја Топличког округа на трансформацију простора у њиховом окружењу. Савремени процеси индустријализације, урбанизације, деаграризације, поларизације и глобализације доприносе поред социо-економског преображаја посматраног простора и стварању нових носилаца функционалних односа у простору. У првом делу рада приказан је теоријско-методолошки приступ и објашњења везана за настанак, еволуцију и генезу насељених места, као и историјат проучавања посматраног проблема. Стварање првих градова и различите теорије о њиховом пореклу можемо сагледати кроз различите периоде у прошлости. Еволуција градова првобитно заснована на духовним функцијама уз велики утицај економско-социјалних делатности, преко многобројних неаграрних функција који чине основни садржај урбаних центара, доприноси развоју гравитационих и централних функција насељених места. Градови својим утицајем „оплемењују“ мрежу околних насеља, јачају међусобне односе насеља и центара и стварају тако читав функционални систем насеља једног подручја, односно гравитационог урбаног језгра. Поделом функција на примарне, секундарне и терцијарно-квартарне, ствара се основа и типологија насеља по функционалном критеријуму према врсти делатности и основних привредних и ванпривредних садржаја у њима. Географски положај Топличког округа, као и општина у Топличком округу са општинским гравитационим центрима представљају врло интересантан простор за истраживање. Међусобни утицаји разноврсних функција, природних потенцијала и особености, вертикалне и хоризонталне рашчлањености геоморфолошких облика, врло сложене и хетерогене демографске слике и створене мреже насеља, представљају врло комплексан простор, односно систем насеља као модел и методолошку основу за даља проучавања или планирања будућег развоја мреже насеља Топличког округа...
