The Danube Banovina has rarely been extensively studied in Yugoslav and more recent Serbian historiography as a formal and legal frame in which the today's territory of Vojvodina used to exist from 1929-1941. The exception to this are rare historiographic analysis of the Danube Banovina or the works on special aspects of its existence which are however entirely separated from the political context that is, from the struggle for the revision of the constitutional and legal status of Vojvodina. On the other hand, researchers who studied the issue of autonomy in that period of time neither analyzed the real impacts of this administrative unit nor connected them with the autonomist (federalist) requirements and almost did not mention the connection at all. This work represents an effort to view the objectivness and reasonableness of the requirements in the context of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia constitution and the Danube Banovina functions since their arguments have led to numerous political, economic and cultural consequences in the recent history and have been still used in current discussions on the constitutional status of Vojvodina. The idea of the political and territorial autonomy of Banat, Bačka, Baranja and Srem continued to exist after the two centuries of struggle of the Serbian people in the Austria-Hungary for the Serbian Vojvodina and the annexation of these Serbian areas and it took on a new meaning and objective in the state of Yugoslavia. There had already been two different concepts of the future state system in the new country prior to the union: the conflict of the unitaristic and (con)federalist concepts which essentially took place between Beograd and Zagreb marked the entire period between the wars. The position of the areas colloquially called Vojvodina in the conflict represented a breaking point for the interests of their actors whereas the issue of its status occured as essential in Serbian-Croatian relations from the very beginning.

У југословенској и новијој српској историографији Дунавска бановина је ретко била предмет ширег проучавања, као формалноправни оквир унутар којег је егзистирало данашње подручје Војводине од 1929-1941. године. Изузетак представљају ретке историографске анализе Дунавске бановине, или радови о посебним аспектима њеног постојања, али потпуно независно од политичког контекста, односно борбе за редефинисање уставноправног положаја Војводине. С друге стране, истраживачи који су се бавили питањем аутономије у овом периоду нису анализирали реалне учинке ове управне јединице, нити их доводили у узрочно-последичну везу са аутономистичким и федералистичким захтевима, већ је готово и не помињу. Овај рад је покушај да се објективност и основаност тих захтева сагледа у контексту државноправног уређења Краљевине Југославије и функционисања Дунавске бановине, будући да је аргументација, на којој су били засновани, произвела бројне политичке, економске и културне консеквенце у новијој историји и користи се у, још увек актуелним, расправама о уставноправном положају Војводине. После двовековне борбе српског народа у Аустроугарској за Српску Војводину, идеја о политичко-територијалној аутономији Баната, Бачке, Барање и Срема опстала је и после присаједињења ових подручја Србији, а у југословенској држави добила је нови смисао и циљ. Већ уочи уједињења, 1918, постојале су различите концепције будућег уређења заједничке државе. У сукобу унитаристичке и (кон)федералистичке концепције, који се у основи одвијао на релацији Београд-Загреб, положај подручја која се називају Војводином представљао је тачку у којој се преламају интереси његових актера, а питање њиховог статуса јавља се од самог почетка као важно питање српско-хрватских односа.
