This dissertation explores intercultural and linguistic competence of participants of international high school student mobility programmes. The part of research dealing with intercultural competence is based on the constructivist approach and the developmental model of intercultural senistivity. Exchange students’ intercultural orientations are investigated after students’ return from their exchange programme in order to establish what these orienttions are and whether there are changes in these orientations in the period following the return home, after students have an opportunity to reflect upon their intercultural experience from a time distance. In addition, students’ experience of foreign language learning during exchange is also ivestigated on the basis of their perspective from a certain time distance. Subjects in the research are Serbian high school students who spent an academic year abroad. Data for the analysis of intercultural competence are obtained by means of Intercultural Development Inventory instrument, while material for the analysis of the development of linguistic competence is obtained through interviews. Results indicate significant individual differences in intercultural orientations of students, and they show that there are changes in students’ intercultural orientations in the period of re-entry, six months following their year abroad. This suggests that the process of intercultural learning related to student mobility does not finish the moment participants return home. The analysis of the process of language learning provides information on the role of foreign language in motivation to participate in international student exchange, the timeframe necessary for mastering the language of the host country, circumstances in which students consider they made most progress in learning. The findings are translated into implications for practice of international student exchange programmes.

Предмет истраживања овог рада су интеркултурална и језичка компетенција учесника програма међународне мобилности ученика средњих школа. Истраживање интеркултуралне компетенције засновано је на конструктивистичком приступу и развојном моделу интеркултуралне осетљивости. Испитују се интеркултуралне оријентације ученика по повратку са програма размене и да ли на том плану долази до промена због прилике да о свом интеркултуралном искуству промисле са извесне временске дистанце. Такође се на основу перспективе ученика с временске дистанце, по повратку с програма размене, испитује и њихово искуство учења страног језика. Субјекти у истраживању су српски средњошколци који су једну школску годину провели у иностранству као ученици на размени. Материјал за анализу добијен је помоћу инструмента Intercultural Development Inventory за утврђивање интеркултуралне оријентације и интервјуа који су с испитаницима вођени на тему учења страног језика. Резултати сугеришу да постоје знатне индивидуалне разлике међу ученицима када је реч о интеркултуралним оријентацијама, као и да и у периоду од шест месеци по повратку са размене долази до промена у оријентацијама. То показује да се интеркултурално учење у вези с програмом мобилности не завршава самим повратком из иностранства. Анализа искуства учења страног језика ученика на размени даје информације о улози страног језика у мотивацији за учешће у програму, временском периоду потребном да се савлада језик земље домаћина, улози наставе језика и околностима у којима ученици сматрају да су највише напредовали у учењу. На основу добијених резултата извучене су импликације за праксу образовних програма међународне размене.
