This thesis is a literary and cultural study of the image of the university and the academic milieu in Norwegian novels. The main goal of the thesis is to analyze how the Norwegian academic experience is depicted and interpreted in novels written from the establishment of the first Norwegian academic institution (1811) until today, as well as to inquire into the readers’ reception of these interpretations. Particular attention is given to four novels significant for the development of the fictional modes of interpreting academia. They are: Arne Garborg’s Bondestudentar (The Making of Daniel Braut) from 1883, Dag Solstad’s Arild Asnes, 1970, Professor Andersens Natt (Professor Andersen’s Night) from 1971 and 1996 respectively, and Helene Uri’s De beste blant oss (The Best among Us) from 2006. These works are analyzed chronologically, and in conjunction with the examination of their literary qualities, attention is given to their cultural context. The dissertation explores whether or not these narratives were influenced by the changing historical and cultural conditions and the internal development of academic institutions. It also probes into the Norwegian readers’ and critics’ reception of these novels and their depictions of the academic institutions. The Norwegian novels which focus on the academic experience can be observed within the internationally acclaimed genre of university fiction. The texts tend to critically examine university life, and to depict it mostly through the eyes of a professor or a student who is a novice in the academic world. In both cases, Norwegian university novels concentrate on the protagonist’s growing awareness of the not-so-idyllic nature of university and the academic community. The thesis also establishes that the readers tend to expect the novels to provide them with a trustworthy insight into the state of the Norwegian higher education. To a certain degree, the narratives reinforce the effect of verisimilitude, but at the same time they seek to undermine it. The distinctive property of the Norwegian university novels is the playful fusion of their cognitive and aesthetical elements, the blend of fact and fiction.

Дисертација представља књижевну и културолошку анализу слике универзитета и академске средине у норвешким романима. Циљ рада је да истражи како се норвешко академско искуство описује и тумачи у романима писаним од оснивања прве високошколске институције у Норвешкој (1811. године) до данас, и како је читалачка публика прихватала ове књижевне интерпретације. Од већег броја дела која тематизују академску заједницу, издвојена су као кључна четири романа, значајна за развој књижевних тумачења универзитетске средине, и њима се у дисертацији посвећује нарочита критичка пажња: роман Bondestudentar (Студенти са села) Арнеа Гарборга (Arne Garborg) из 1883. године, романи Дага Сулстада (Dag Solstad) Arild Asnes, 1970 (Арил Аснес, 1970.) и Professor Andersens natt (Ноћ професора Андерсена) из 1971. и 1996. године, и роман Хелене Ури (Helene Uri) De beste blant oss (Најбољи међу нама) написан 2006. године. Наведена дела се анализирају хронолошки, испитују се њихове књижевне одлике, ванкњижевни контекст и рецепција. У дисертацији се разматра у којој су мери и како историјска и културна збивања у друштву и развој академских институција деловали на промене естетских интерпретација универзитета, а уз то се испитује и какав је био одјек ових романа у норвешкој стручној, академској и у најширој јавности. Докторски рад показује да је романе који тематизују академску средину могуће посматрати у оквиру жанра универзитетског романа. Утврђено је да разматрана дела већином критички тумаче академску средину и сагледавају је најчешће из угла професора или студента који тек приспева у академску заједницу. У оба случаја, романи се концентришу на процес рушења јунакових илузија о академској заједници и универзитету. Дисертација, такође, утврђује да читаоци у литерарним интерпретацијама универзитета углавном очекују да препознају истините приказе стања у норвешком високом школству. Установљено је да су романи донекле заиста давали повода оваквом читању, али су га истовремено и проблематизовали. Писци ових дела се поигравају финим спојем сазнајног и естетског, стварности и фикције.
