Makame (doslovno zborovi) predstavljaju prvobitno arapski književni rod rimovane proze sa intervalima poezije gde je upadljiva retorska ekstravagancija. Rukopisi Haririjevih Makama, anegdote Abu Zajda iz Sarudža, prevarantskog pustolova, čestosu ilustrovani minijaturama. Al-Hariri je daleko prevazišao retorsku stilistiku Al-Hamadanija, osnivača ovog roda, u toj meri da su njegove makame korišćene kao udžbenik retorike i leksikografije (katalogizacija retkih reči iz beduinskog govora u sedmom i osmom veku) i kao pravi udžbenik sve do početka savremenog doba

Maqāma (literally "assemblies") are an (originally) Arabic literary genre of rhymed prose with intervals of poetry in which rhetorical extravagance is conspicuous. Manuscripts of al-Harīrī'sMaqāmāt, anecdotes of a roguish wanderer Abu Zayd from Saruj, were frequently illustrated with miniatures. Al-Harīrī far exceeded the rhetorical stylistics of the genre’s innovator, Al-Hamadhani, to such a degree that his maqāmāt were used as a textbook for rhetoric and lexicography (the cataloging of rare words from the Bedouin speech from the 7th and 8th centuries) and indeed as schoolbooks for until Early Modern times
