Fonetski sistem klasičnog arapskog jezika sastoji se od dvadeset osam suglasnika i tri kratka i duga samoglasnika. Imenica je promenljiva po rodu (muški i ženski), broju (jednina, dvojina i množina), stanju (neodređeni, određeni i konstruktivni) i inflekciji (padeži subjekta, pripadnosti i objekta). Glagol se menja kako prefiksacijom tako i sufiksacijom i izražava vreme ili aspekt, stanje, vid, lice, rod i broj.
