Arabic lexicology, or the study of the meanings of Arabic words and idioms is the most fundamental of all the instrumental sciences. While a reader of worksin his mother tongue has many years to develop his grasp of vocabulary and idiom, and a person specialising in foreign languages can give dedicated attention to learning them, the student of the many, varied, and difficult Islamic sciences is required in relatively little time to acquire such detailed knowledge of a complex foreign tongue for the purpose of reading and critically engaging with works written centuries ago.

Arapska leksikologija ili izučavanje značenja arapskih reči i izraza predstavlja najfundamentalniju disciplinu među primenjenim lingvističkim naukama. Dok je čitaocu dela na svom maternjem jeziku potrebno mnogo godina da razvije sopstveno razumevanje vokabulara i idioma, a osoba koja usavršava strani jezik može posvetiti pažnju da bi ih naučio, izučavaocu mnogih, raznih i teških islamskih nauka potrebno je relativno malo vremena da bi stekao takvo podrobno znanje složenog stranog jezika kako bi čitao i stekao kritički odnos prema delima napisanim pre mnogo vekova.
