The original Medinan Muslims, the Ansar, held a meeting to discuss choosing a new leader among themselves, to rule their part of the community. When the news of the meeting spread, Abu Bakr, Umar, and Abu Ubaidah ibn al Jarrah rushed to the scene. Abu Bakr argued that if the Ansar chose a leader, to lead the Ansar only, the Muslim community would split. The new leader must come from the Quraysh, Muhammad's clan; any other choice would destroy the community. Sa'd ibn Ubadah agreed to this.

Prvobitni medinski muslimani, ansar, održali su skup kako bi između sebe raspravili izbor novog vođe koji će vladati njihovim delom zajednice. Kada se raširila vest o skupu, Ab Bakr, Umar i Abu Ubajda ibn al-Džara ustremili su se na okupljene. Abu Bakr je tvrdio da će se raspasti islamska zajednica ako ansar izabere vođu koji će predvoditi samo ansar. Novi vođa mora poteći iz plemena Kurejš, Muhamedovog klana; svaki drugi izbor bi razorio zajednicu. Saad ibn Ubada se složio sa time.
