Abžad je takav sistem pisanja u kojem po jedan simbol uvek ili obično označava po jedan suglasnik; čitalac mora sam da upotrebi odgovarajući samoglasnik. To je termin koji je uveo Piter T. Denijels da bi zamenio termin konsonantski ili slogovni alfabet koji je ukazivao na porodicu pisama koja se zove zapadnosemtiska porodica pisama. U širokoj upotrebi abžadi u imenu često sadrže reč alfabet, kao što su arapski alfabet i feničanski alfabet. Samo ime abžad potiče od arapske reči za alfabet. Reč alfabet na srpskom vodi poreklo iz grčkog jezika gde su prva dva slova A (alfa) i B (beta), dakle alfabeta. U arapskom A (Alif), B (Ba), G (Gim), D (Dal) sačinjavaju reč abdžad što znači alfabet.

An abjad is a type of writing system in which each symbol always or usually stands for a consonant; the reader must supply the appropriate vowel. It is a term suggested by Peter T. Daniels to replace the common terms consonantary orconsonantal alphabet or syllabary to refer to the family of scripts called West Semitic. In popular usage, abjads often contain the word "alphabet" in their names, such as "Arabic alphabet" and "Phoenician alphabet". The name abjad itself derives from the Arabic word for alphabet. The word "Alphabet" inEnglish has a source in Greek language the first two letters of which were A(Alpha) and B (Beta), hence Alphabeta. In Arabic, A (Alif), B (Ba), G (Gim), D (Dal) make the word "Abjad" which means "Alphabet".
