Предмет ове дисертације је степен употребе и очувања српског језика, те степен употребе енглеског језика код припадника прве генерације српске дијаспоре у Западној Аустралији, односно у Перту, као и њихови ставови о српском језику и локалној српској језичкој заједници, српској култури и отаџбини. Ово истраживање се фокусира на етнолингвистичку виталност, на перципиране језичке компетенције код Срба у главном граду Западне Аустралије, и на моделе њихове идентификације. У истраживању је учествовала седамдесет и једна особа. Студија обухвата истраживање повезаности фактора очувања језика и то кроз сагледавање објективних фактора који обухватају статус (социјални, економски, језички), демографију (број говорника, дистрибуција говорника), институционалну подршку (медији масовне комуникације, образовање, култура, религија), и субјективних фактора које пак чине оне вредности које припадници мањинских заједница придају свом мањинском или већинском (одн. доминантном) језичком идиому. Поред ове две врсте фактора, истраживање етнолингвистичке виталности обухвата и степен употребе језика припадника мањинске заједнице, тј. њихову компетенцију у употреби и матерњег и већинског језика, као и њихове стратегије у свакодневној комуникацији и сл. У уводу дисертације дате су неке опште одредбе о проблематици и приступу овом истраживању. Следеће поглавље садржи теоријски оквир овог истраживања, у њему су обрађене језичке политике и језичко планирање, феномен језика у контакту, затим теорије очувања/замене језика уз анализу фактора које досадашња истраживања идентификују као релевантне за раније резултате истраживања у области језичких контаката у вишејезичним заједницама, попут културног идентитета, теорија о двојезичности/мултилингвизму/плурилингвизму, етницитета, те односа религије и очувања језика. Овде је дат и преглед постојећих релевантних истраживања на плану очувања српског и неких других језика у Аустралији и неким другим земљама...

The subject of this dissertation is the degree of use and preservation of the Serbian language along with the degree of use of English among the members of the first generation of Serbian diaspora in Western Australia, in Perth, as well as their attitudes about the Serbian language and the local Serbian language community, Serbian culture and their homeland. This research focuses on ethnolinguistic vitality, perceived language competences of the Serbs in the capital of Western Australia, and the models of their identification. The research involves responses from seventy one persons. The study involves the research of the connection between language preservation factors by regarding objective factors that include status (social, economic, linguistic), demography (number of speakers, distribution of speakers), institutional support (mass communication media, education, culture, religion), and subjective factors that are those values that members of minority communities attribute to their minority or majority (i.e. dominant) language idiom. In addition to these two types of factors, the research of the ethnolinguistic vitality also includes the degree of language use of the members of the minority community, i.e. their competence in the use of both the mother tongue and majority language, as well as their strategies in everyday communication, etc. The introduction provides some general overview of the issue and the approach to this research. The next chapter provides a theoretical framework of this research; it deals with language policies and language planning, language contact phenomena, theories of language switch/preservation along with the analysis of factors that previous research identified as relevant for earlier results of the research in the field of language contacts in multilingual communities, such as cultural identity, ethnicity, the theories of bilingualism/multi-lingualism/plurilinguism, and the relationship between religion and language preservation.
