Study of the development of modern architecture in Vojvodina was conducted with the purpose to demonstrate the synthesisof such development through the analysis of numerous works and observed from various aspects, by interpreting how the concept of 'modern' manifested itself in construction practices from 19th century until 1970s. The development of modern architecture in Vojvodina had been under close research from the beginning of utilization of steel and concrete constructions in industrial architecture and growing complexity of a traditional pannonian house, until 1970s and the rise of postmodern architecture in Vojvodina. Secession was essential to the development of modern architecture as it liberated architecture from the historical burden by connecting new technology and art. As a result, architecture adopted an elegant, sometimes lavish and functional style, which was simplified over time. The most important objects across Vojvodina were built in the style of secessionist architecture at the beginning of 20th century – city halls, monasteries, hospitals, schools and so forth, modeled on similar examples in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. They were constructed by some of the most significant Hungarian architects, so the architecture of Vojvodina reflected the major trends in Central European architecture. Examples of secessionist architecture are most common in Subotica and its surrounding area Palic, which became a symbol of this style in Serbia due to the sumptuous Hungarian Secessionist architectural style.Other examples with different variants of this style were soon to be found in Senta, Kanjiza, Sombor, Novi Sad, Zrenjanin, Becej, Vrbas, Kikinda, and Apatin.Secession reached southern parts of Vojvodina with some delay, and was mainly brought there by the second generation of Hungarian architects who did not particularly emphasize the elements of folk culture. By the end of 1920s, the first signs of the forthcoming International style or the modern style in architecture were noticeable on the buildings constructed in the style of late secession, or late 'naked' historicism. Education of local architects in Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Budapest, Paris and London, where they got acquainted with the use of new materials and construction technologies, influenced the emergence of Style Moderne and abandonment of historicism. This shift in consciousness also occurred due to open public and international competitions and visits to the world exhibitions...
