Предмет ове докторске дисертације је књижевно дело Елиф Шафак (1971), једне од најистакнутијих представница турске постмодерне књижевности. Како се стваралаштво ниједног писца не може разматрати изван ширег друштвеног и књижевног контекста, тако се у једном делу дисертације даје краћи осврт на развој постмодерне књижевности у Турској, њене најзначајније ствараоце и дела. Узимајући у обзир специфичне околности под којима је турско друштво у свим сегментима доживело препород у једно модерно, секуларно и прозападно оријентисано друштво, проучавање турске књижевности неодвојиво је везано за сагледавање ширих политичких и друштвених промена. Кључни период настанка постмодернистичке књижевности у Турској биле су седамдесете и осамдесете године 20. века. Почетак миленијума, обележен кризом идентитета, одсуством чврстог вредносног система, индивидуализмом и помањкањем класичних ауторитета доноси промене и у турском друштву и његовој књижевности. Деконструкција, поновно промишљање историје, ликови са маргина друштва и из различитих мањинских група, свакако да су се писцима овога доба чинили погоднима за књижевну обраду. Будући да је турско друштво било, а може се рећи и да то још увек јесте, дубоко подељено на присталице традиције и модерног, као и све што је тиме обухваћено, нови талас у књижевности налази се на мети бројних критичара који су сматрали да ће тиме бити угрожено све што је изворно турско. Елиф Шафак је, уз још неколико савремених писаца, на челу бројних турских постмодерниста који се у својим делима окрећу „популарној“ тематици и поновном и критичком проматрању и преиспитивању историје, традиције и турског идентитета. Јединствена наративна техника и тематика која превазилази „локално“, чини да њена дела буду веома популарна и ван граница Турске. Ипак, због писања на два језика, али и обрађивања тема као што је геноцид над Јерменима, дела Елиф Шафак су предмет бројних дискусија и критика које упућују присталице обеју струја у Турској, и модернисти и конзервативци. Имајући у виду одлике романа Елиф Шафак, њен опус представља пример турске постмодерне прозе која до сада није била предмет проучавања у нашој науци.

The subject of this doctoral dissertation is the literary work of Elif Shafak (1971), one of the most prominent representatives of Turkish postmodern literature. Since no writer’s work could be observed out of a broader social and literary context, one part of the dissertation consists of a short overview of development of postmodernism in Turkey, its most influential authors and their works. Taking into consideration the specific circumstances that transformed аll segments of Turkish society into a modern, secular and west oriented society, research of Turskish literature is inseparably attached to broader observation of political and social changes. The key period for emergence of postmodern literature in Turkey was during 1970’s and 1980’s. Dawn of the new millennium, marked with an identity crisis, absence of firm value system, individualism and lack of the classic authorities, brings changes into Turkish society and its literature. Deconstruction, rethinking of history, characters originating from the margins of the society and different minority groups, undoubtly was favourable for the literary processing. Since Turkish society was, and it could be said that it still is, deeply divided to supporters of traditional and modern, as well as everything considered by it, new literary trend is a target of many critics supposing it would compromise everything genuinely Turkish. Elif Shafak is, among a few more contemporary authors, at the lead of numerous Turkish postmodernists who turn toward „popular“ thematic as well repeated and critical observation and reexamination of history, tradition and Turkish identity. Unique narrative technique and thematic exceeding the „local“, makes her works very popular outside Turkey as well. Nevertheless, because of her writing in two languages, as well as dealing with themes such is Armenian genocide, Elif Shafak’s novels are subject to many discussions and critics by the supporters of both currents in Turkey, both modernists and conservatives. Considering the characteristics of Elif Shafak’s novels, her literary work represents an example of Turkish postmodern prose which has not been a subject of research in our science so far.
