Полазећи од чињенице да интегрална историја српских библиотека до сада није написана, радови који темељито истражују поједине епохе у контексту развоја писмености, социологије књиге и читања, те институционализације културних и образовних потреба становништва, сматрају се предусловом за њен настанак. Сразмерно кратак, али веома буран период српске историје 1901-1918, показује се као изузетно значајан за постављање основа јавног библиотекарства у Србији. Докторски рад, Јавне библиотеке у Србији од 1901. до 1918. године треба да одговори овој обавези, да успостави континуитете у српском библиотекарству. Поступак истраживања заснивао се на проналажењу, проучавању и анализи архивске грађе, при чему су истражени сви релевантни фондови Архива Србије и Архива Југославије. Коришћене су, истовремено, објављене публикације и укупна библиотечка литература домаћа и део стране која се односи на проблем јавних библиотека, од идеје до њиховог отварања. Компаративна истраживања допринела су новим сазнањима која значајно померају неке устаљене границе када се ради о почецима, односно о заостајању у формирању јавних библиотека у Србији. Осим компаративне, током израде овог рада коришћена је и историјска метода, са хронолошким приступом. Исцрпна истраживања расположиве архивске грађе, укључујући и оригинална документа Војног гувернмана, проучавање објављених и необјављених интерних докумената библиотека, обрада периодичних публикација, упоређивање и проверавање општинских аката, извештаја, потврда, спискова, систематизовање свих података, утврђивање хронолошког тока оснивања јавних библиотека, омогућавају да се помере границе досадашњих истраживања...

Proceeding from the fact that the integral history of Serbian libraries has never been written, a prerequisite for its occurrence is considered to be the body of works that thoroughly explore each era in contexts of literacy development, sociology of the book and reading, and institutionalization of cultural and educational needs of the population. Proportionally short, but very turbulent period of Serbian history from 1901 to 1918, proves itself to be extremely important for laying the foundation of public library system in Serbia. This thesis, Public libraries in Serbia from year 1901 to 1918, needs to fill this gap and establish continuity in Serbian librarianship. The research process was based on retrieval, study and analysis of archive records, wherethrough all relevant Archive of Serbia and Archive of Yugoslavia funds were explored. At the same time, published titles and complete domestic and a part of foreign library literature dealing with the subject of public libraries, from conceiving the idea to their opening, was used. Comparative studies have contributed new insights that significantly shifted some established boundaries when it comes to origins and getting behind with establishing public libraries in Serbia. During the preparation of this paper, in addition to comparative, the historical method with the chronological approach was used. Thorough investigation of available archive records, including original Directorate of Military Affairs documents, study of published and unpublished internal library documents, processing periodicals, comparison and verification of municipal documents, reports, certificates, lists, data systematization and determining chronological flow of establishing public libraries made it possible to push the boundaries of former research...
