Polazeći od pojma obraza kao kulturološki-društveno uslovljenog fenomena koji poseduje svaki pojedinac, a koji može biti verbalno ugrožen u toku komunikacije, ova disertacija za predmet ima realizaciju onih govornih činova koji ugrožavaju obraz, te jezičkih sredstava koja to ugrožavanje potencijalno ublažavaju, na primeru srpskog jezika sa jedne strane i dve varijante engleskog jezika, britanske i američke, sa druge. Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je da se utvrde sličnosti i razlike pri realizaciji govornih činova koji ugrožavaju obraz, u spskom i u dve varijante engleskog jezika, sa posebnim fokusom na sredstva upotrebljena za ublažavanja takvih činova, i to sredstva koja pripadaju: pragmatičkim, sintaksičkim, leksičkim i kognitivnim nivoima jezika. Disertacija je podeljena na četiri dela. Prva dva dela su posvećena metodologiji istraživanja, sa polaznim osnovama i planom nastanka i realizacije ovog istraživanja, odnosno teorijskoj podlozi istraživanja, sa prikazom teorija i dosadašnjih istraživanja relevantnih za temu. Treći, najobimniji deo disertacije predstavlja analizu podataka dobijenih upotrebom testa dopune diskursa, u pismenoj formi, koji su popunjavali ispitanici u Srbiji, Velikoj Britaniji i Americi. U poslednjem, četvrtom delu rada nalaze se zaključni komentari u vezi sa rezultatitma analize, kao i smernice za dalja istraživanja.

Starting from the concept of face as a culturally and socially dependant phenomenon which can be verbally threatened in human interaction, the subject of this thesis is the realization of those speech acts that can be threatening to face, as well as the linguistic means which can potentially minimize the threat. The samples on which the research has been carried out come from Serbian on the one side, and two variants of the English language, namely British (BE) and American (AE), on the other. The main goal of this research has been to identify similarities and dissimilarities in the realization of face-threatening speech acts (FTAs) in the Serbian language and the two mentioned variants of English, its special focus being the mitigation devices in such speech acts, belonging to the: pragmatic, syntactic, lexical and cognitive levels of language. The thesis is divided into four parts. The first and the second deal with the methodology of research, and the theoretical basis for research, respectively. Whereas the former part clarifies the baselines and the plan for the realization of this research, the latter states the theoretical basis for the research, describing and commenting on the theories and some previous studies relevant for the subject of the thesis. The third and most elaborate part of the thesis is dedicated to the analysis of the collected data gathered by means of written Discourse Completion Tests, filled by examinees from Serbia, UK and USA. The fourth, final part of the thesis, offers concluding remarks, with regards to the results of the analysis, as well as some guidelines for further research.
