According to Shah Abdul Aziz Dehlawi, a Mufassir should keep in mind the following three conditions in his exegesis of the Qur'an: a) Every word should be explained with its real meaning. In order to achieve the mufassirshould have command in linguistic knowledge and grammar. b) Everything needs to be explained within its reference and context to the main theme. c) The interpretation should not be contrary to that of the Sahaba (Muhammad's companion) who witnessed the coming of the revelations to the Prophet. Though there are both Muslims and non-Muslims who have written commentaries on the Qur'an, the majority of Muslim scholars insist that the mufassir must be a Muslim. He should be sound in belief,aqida; well grounded in the knowledge of Arabic and its rules as a language. He should have the ability for precise comprehension of the Qur'an and abstain from the use of mere opinion.

Po Šahu Abdulu Azizu Dehlaviju mufasir bi prilikom tumačenja Kurana morao na umu da ima tri uslova: a) Svaka reč bi trebalo da bude objašnjena istinskim značenjem. Da bi postao mufasir, pojedinac bi morao da ovlada lingvističkim znаnjem i gramatikom. b) Sve bi trebalo da bude objašnjeno u okviru povezanosti i konteksta sa glavnom temom. c) Tumačenje ne bi trebalo da bude suprotstavljeno sahabu (Muhamedov pratilac) koji je bio svedok dolazak otkrovenja proroku. Iako među onima koji pišu tumačenje Kurana ima i muslimana i pripadnika drugih veroispovesti, većina islamskih naučnika uporno tvrdi da mufasir mora da bude musliman. Trebalo bi da se odlikuje zdravom verom, akidom, dobro postavljenom na znanju arapskog jezika i njegovih pravila. Trebalo bi da bude kadar da tačno razume Kuran i da se suzdrži od primene isključivo mišljenja.
