Among the many definitions given by the early scholars to Sacred Hadithis that of as-Sayyid ash-Sharif al-Jurjani (died in 816 A.H.) in his lexiconAt-Tarifat where he says: "A Sacred Hadith is, as to the meaning, from Allahthe Almighty; as to the wording, it is from the messenger of Allah. Itis that which Allah the Almighty has communicated to His Prophet throughrevelation or in dream, and he, peace be upon him, has communicated it in hisown words. Thus Qur'an is superior to it because, besides being revealed, itis His wording."

Hadis kudsi predstavlja izreke proroka Muhameda koje mu otkrio svemoćni Alah. Hadis kudsi (ili sveti hadis) tako je nazvan zbog toga što je, za razliku od većine hadisa koji su prorokovog porekla, njegova autentičnost (sanad) izvedena od svemoćnog, a ne od proroka Muhameda. Među mnogim definicijama koje su rani naučnici dali za sveti hadis nalazi se i ona as-Sajidaaš-Šarifa al-Džurdžanija (umro 816. A.H) u svom leksikonu At-Tarifat gde veli: „Sveti hadis svojim značenjem potiče od svemogućeg Alaha; što se tiče izraza reči, on je od Alahovog vesnika. Svemoćni Alah je opštio sa svojim prorokom posredstvom otkrovenja ili u snu, a on ga je, mir s njime, preneo vlastitim rečima. Stoga je Kuran nadmoćniji od hadisa jer je, osim toga što je otkriven, sročen Božjim rečima.“
