Muhammad desperately hoping for an accommodation with his tribe, either from fear or in the hope of succeeding more readily in this way, pronounced a verse acknowledging the existence of three Meccan goddesses considered to be the daughters of Allah, and appealing for their intercession. Muhammad later retracted the verses at the behest of Gabriel, claiming that the verses were whispered by the devil himself. This episode known as "The Story of the Cranes" (transliteration: Qissat al Gharaneeq) is also known as "Satanic Verses". Some scholars argued against its historicity on various grounds. Očajnički se nadajući da će naći mesto za svoje pleme, Muhamed je ili iz straha ili u nadi da će na taj način uspeti da budu spremniji izgovorio jedan stih kojim se potvrđuje postojanje triju mekanskih boginja koje su smatrane kćerima Alaha i zatražio zauzimanje za njih. Muhamed je kasnije, na Gavrilovu zapovest, povukao te stihove tvrdeći da mu je te stihove došapnuo sam đavo. Događaj poznat kao "Priča o ždralovima" (arapski Kisatu l-garanik) poznat je i kao "Satanski stihovi". Neki naučnici tvrde na osnovu raznih argumenata da taj događaj nije istorijski utemeljen.
