U arapskom i islamskom društvu u srednjem veku veština pisanja pisama bila je sastavni deo pismenosti i kulturnih aktivnosti kojа se zvala nauka kompozicije (ilm al-inša). To je možda, posle Kurana, bila konačna manifestacija književnog proznog stila. Termin inša, koji je korišćen već u trećem veku pohidžri, počeo je da označava nezavisni književni žanr u obliku stilskih priručnika sastavljenih uglavnom od prepiske ili dokumenata poslatih vladarima ili pisama upućenih prijateljima.

In Arab and Islamic society in the medieval period the art of letter writing was an integral part of the literacy and cultural activities, called science of composition (ilm al-insha). It was, perhaps, the ultimate manifestation of literary prose style after the Quran. The term insha, used at least as early as the end of the third century A.H. began designating an independent literary genre in the form of style manuals composed mainly of epistles or docuiments to rulers, or letters to friends.
