The doctoral dissertation entitled ’Postcolonial criticism: theoretical and methodological issues’ aims at providing an insight into the origin and genesis, as well as, in the first place, into the specific character of postcolonial criticism as a part of a literary criticism. The research focuses on rather a heterogeneous corpus of papers from the field of postcolonial studies, spanning back several decades into the recent past and covering mainly the Anglo-American academic and cultural grounds. Along with the characteristics as regards subject matter, topics, disciplines, and ‘methodology’, the author discusses those related to ideas and ideology, that is, in a wider sense, to aspects concerning postcolonial notions and terms. Principally speaking, the goal of this dissertation is reflected in efforts to differentiate between discursive aspects of postcolonial criticism as literary, cultural, and social critique, that is, specific features of its heritage that could prove incentive for further research into literature and culture. Our insisting on understanding ideological premises that the postcolonial criticism is built upon, along with a certain degree of critical stance, are conditioned, above all, the very ‘political” intentions of postcolonialism, that is, its intentions to act as ethical or interventionist critique. By taking an insight into works of key authors in the field, the author of this dissertation draws a conclusion that there should be a certain amount of caution expressed with regard to making difference between nominal from ‘applied’ standpoints, even when, or especially when we deal with theoretical constructs. Given the humanistic tendencies that have soared over the past four decades and assumed the global character, especially in terms of quantity, with the ‘methodology’ of such research concerning the traditional framework of literary criticism being in question, our analysis of postcolonial theory, criticism and studies is directed towards the following: positioning of a critic and criticism as regards culture, language, and identity; defining its disciplinary and ideological position in relation to humanities (in particular literary criticism and comparative literature); criticism of ‘methodological’ postmodernism, and its perspectives concerning postcolonial standpoints in Serbian-speaking academia. This attempt of reconstructing the postcolonial cultural and political reading in an inverted design takes us, at least in a preliminary fashion, towards formulating the Serbian postcolonial standpoint.

Докторском дисертацијом под насловом „Теоријско-методолошки проблеми постколонијалне критике“ настојали смо стећи увид у поријекло и генезу, али, на првом мјесту, у специфичности постколонијалне критике као савременог књижевнотеоријског истраживачког правца и дисциплине. Предмет истраживања био је изузетно хетероген корпус радова сврстаних у поље постколонијалне критике, теорије и студија, насталих у претходних неколико деценија на англоамеричком културном и образовном простору. Упоредо са предметним, тематским, дисциплинарним и „методолошким“ особеностима разматрани су и идејни, идеолошки, односно појмовно-терминолошки аспекти постколонијализма. Циљ дисертације огледао се у покушају разлучивања дискурзивних аспеката постколонијалне критике као књижевне, културне и друштвене критике, односно специфичних особености њеног насљеђа које може бити потицајно за даљња проучавања књижевности и култура. Инсистирање на разумијевању идеолошких премиса на којима се постколонијална критика утврђује, те извијесна доза критичности, условљени су, прије свега, самим „политичким“ интенцијама постколонијализма, односно тежњама да буду етичка или интервенционистичка критика. Увидом у радове главних аутора закључили смо да је потребно његовати извијесну дозу опреза, односно разликовати номинална од „примијењених“ становишта чак и када су, односно посебно када су, у питању теоријске конструкције. С обзиром да је ријеч о хуманистичким истраживачким струјањима која су у протекле четири деценије доживјела изузетно велики успон и имају глобални карактер, а да је тешко говорити о „методологији“ постколонијалне критике у традиционалном књижевно-научном смислу ријечи, наша анализа постколонијалне критике усмјерена је у правцу: културно-језичког и идентититетског позиционирања критичара и критике; дисциплинарног и идеолошког положаја према хуманистици (посебно науци о књижевности и компаратистици); критици „методолошког“ постмодернизма те перспективистичком развијању српског постколонијалног становишта. Покушај реконструкције постколонијалних културно-политичких читања у обрнутом дизајну, одвео нас је, макар прелиминарном, формулисању српског постколонијалног становишта.
