La historia del mundo humano está plagada de migraciones, conquistas, guerras, es decir, situaciones en las que el encuentro entre culturas y lenguas diferentes fue inevitable. Hoy en día se puede afirmar que la actualidad no dista mucho de los tiempos antiguos – somos testigos de la ola de migraciones del Oriente Próximo que no para desde hace unos diez años, pero también de muchos conflictos armados que siguen teniendo lugar en el mundo. En dichos acontecimientos, los que tienen un papel vital, pero no siempre muy visible son las personas que interpretan y traducen en idiomas diferentes. Mi estudio aborda el papel de las intérpretes en los servicios públicos que es la rama de la interpretación que ha cobrado más valor en las últimas décadas, dados los cambios socio-políticos y demográficos mencionados en el párrafo anterior. El objetivo que se persigue con esta investigación es describir la formación, el papel y la importancia de dichos profesionales, tomando como ejemplo el ámbito judicial en Serbia. Para ello, he tenido en cuenta los datos recopilados de veintiocho encuestas, tres entrevistas y un juicio con intérprete. En los tres métodos de esta investigación participaron tanto las intérpretes y los intérpretes como las traductoras y los traductores que ejercen su trabajo en el territorio de la República de Serbia. Los resultados de esta investigación demostraron que hay mucho desequilibrio en el trabajo de estas profesionales. Así se confirmaron las hipótesis de que la situación actual, con la falta de una legislación adecuada, contribuye a la falta de profesionalización. Es decir, existe mucho aprendizaje autodidacta por parte de las intérpretes y traductoras y también visiones y expectativas que difieren según el caso. Igualmente, esta investigación se erige como una herramienta para dar voz a aquellas personas que son la de los otros y hacerlas visibles en la sociedad en la que no suelen serlo.

Људска историја обележена је миграцијама, освајањима, ратовима, односно ситуацијама у којима се није могао избећи сусрет различитих култура и језика. Можемо да потврдимо да се данашњица не разликује превише од тих старих времена – сведоци смо миграцијских таласа са Блиског Истока у протеклих десетак година, као и непрекидних оружаних сукоба у одређеним деловима света. Они који у тим догађањима имају значајну улогу, мада не увек превише видљиву, јесу особе које усмено и писано преводе са различитих језика и на њих. Моје истраживање се бави улогом усмених преводилаца у државним службама, што је грана превођења којој се све више пажње посвећује последњих деценија, имајући у виду управо горепоменуте друштвено-политичке и демографске промене. Циљ који се жели постићи овим истраживањем јесте пружање детаљнијих информација о образовању, улози и значају преводилаца, узимајући за пример правно превођење у Србији. За испуњење циља, сакупила сам двадесет и осам анкета, обавила три интервјуа и присуствовала једном суђењу са преводиоцем. Учесници у сва три дела овог истраживања биле су преводитељке и преводиоци који посао усменог и писаног превођења обављају на територији Републике Србије. Резултати овог истраживања показали су постојање велике неједнакости у раду ових професионалаца. Тако се потврђује хипотеза да тренутна ситуација, са недовољном регулативом о раду тумача и преводилаца, доприноси недостатку професионализације. Другим речима, преводиоци и тумачи најчешће уче кроз сопствена или кроз искуства других, а постоји и много различитих погледа на ситуацију и очекивања која се разликују од случаја до случаја. На крају, сматрам да је циљ који следи један од најважнијих аспеката мог истраживања – бити глас особа које су обично глас других и учинити их видљивијим и друштву у коме то обично нису.

Human history has been riddled with migrations, conquests, wars, that is, situations in which the encounter of different cultures and languages was inevitable. Today we can confirm that the present does not differ significantly from these old times – we are witnessing waves of migrations coming from the Middle East and Africa which have been happening in the past ten years, and at the same time we see that armed conflicts continue to take place in the world. The people who have a vital role in all these events, even though not always too visible, are interpreters and translators. My investigation examines the role of public service interpreters, which is the branch of Interpreting studies which has gained much importance in the last decades, due to the socio-political and demographic changes mentioned in the previous paragraph. The aim pursued with this study is to describe the education, the role and the importance of these professionals, having as the example the field of legal interpreting in Serbia. To achieve that goal, I have taken into account the data collected from twenty-eight questionnaires, three interviews and one court trial with the interpreter. In all three methods of this research, the participants were interpreters and translators who work within the borders of the territory of the Republic of Serbia. The results of this investigation showed that there is much imbalance in this profession in Serbia. The outcome has confirmed the hypothesis that the current situation, with the lack of an adequate legislation, attributes to the lack of professionalization. In other words, there is a lot of autonomous learning conducted by interpreters and translators themselves, which leads to visions and expectations that are different depending on the case and do not show uniformity within the system. Furthermore, this study emerges as a tool to give voice to the people who are usually the voice of others and to make them visible in the society in which they are usually not.
