The subject of the research of the doctoral thesis Visual identity of the town of Pirot in the 19th century is directed towards the examination of the visual identity of the city of Pirot during the XIX century. The main goal of the research is to understand the relationship between time and the visual identity of the city transformation on the example of Pirot, as well as the analysis and reconstruction of visual culture objects which are shaped over a period of time and conditioned by different influences. In the first place, the study of Ottoman-Serbian Pirot is a complex phenomenon of contemporary art history and the study of visual culture, since it is a paradigm of intersection and conflict of cultures. We will try to contribute to a more complete knowledge of the cultural past of the city of Pirot by emphasizing the entire complex cultural trends, without intending to list every object of visual culture of that area that founded the spatial-visual identity of the modern city. This will provide insight into the characteristic trends, phenomena in shaping the visual culture of the city, initially within the Ottoman Empire, and afterwards in the liberated Serbian city, which aimed to establish a new national identity after the liberation. The aim of this study is to complete the picture of the Ottoman-Balkan trading city of the XIX century on the example of Pirot, as well as to present unknown data and authentic artistic units.

Предмет истраживања докторске тезе Визуелни идентитет Пирота у XIX веку усмерен je ка испитивању визуелног идентитета града Пирота током XIX века. Основни циљ истраживања је разумевање односа времена и трансформације визуелног идентитета града на примеру Пирота као и анализа и реконструкција предмета визуелне културе који су уобличени током одређеног временског периода и условљени различитим утицајима. У првом реду проучавање османско-српског Пирота представља комплексан феномен савремене историје уметности и студија визуелне културе, будући да је он парадигма укрштања и конфликта култура. Настојаћемо да се допринесе потпунијем познавању културне прошлости града Пирота тако што ће бити наглашени целокупни комплексни културни токови, без намере да се попише сваки предмет и објекат визуелне културе тог простора који је утемељио просторно-визуелни идентитет савременог града. Тако ће се остварити увид у карактеристичне токове, појаве и феномене у обликовању визуелне културе града, првобитно у оквиру Османског царства, а након тога и слободног српског града који за циљ има установљавање новог националног идентитета након ослобођења. Циљ овако замишљене студије јесте и употпуњавање слике о османско-балканском трговачком граду XIX века на примеру Пирота, као и представљање до сада непознатих података и аутентичних уметничких целина
