Following his election to the caliphate, Abu Bakr and Umar with a few other companions headed to Fatimah's house to obtain homage from Ali and his supporters who had gathered there. Then Umar threatened to set the house on fire unless they came out and swore allegiance with Abu Bakr. Although the event of Umar setting fire to Fatima's house is widely recorded in many Sunni and all Shi'ite histories, there is adisagreement among the sources about what happened next.

Posle izbora za halifu, Abu Bakr i Umar sa nekolicinom drugih pratilaca uputili su se Fatiminoj kući kako bi obezbedili dom za Alija i njegove sledbenike koji su se tamo već bili okupili. Tada je Umar pripretio da će zapaliti kuću ako oni ne izađu i Abu Bakru se ne zakunu na poslušnost. Iako je događaj sa Umarom pretnjom da će zapaliti Fatiminu kuću široko zastupljen u mnogim sunitskim i svim šiitskim istorijama, postoji neslaganje u izvorima šta se dogodilo kasnije.
