Kada je izbor Abu Bakra za halifu bio svršena stvar, Ali je održao obećanje čak i posle Fatimine smrti. Ali nije aktivno potraživao svoje pravo jer nije želeo da baci islamsku zajednicu u nastajanju u sukob. Zabeleženo je da i u sunitskim i u šiitskim izvorima da je sve do svoje smrti Fatima ostala ljuta na Abu Bakra i Umara zbog onoga što su učinili. Ali je noću sahranio Fatimu a da nijedan Abu Bakrov pratilac nije bio prisutan i mesto njenog groba je i dalje predmet rasprava.

When Abu Bakr's selection to the caliphate was presented as a fait accompli, Ali withheld his oaths of allegiance until after the death of Fatimah. Ali did not actively assert his own right because he did not want to throw the nascent Muslim community into strife. It is recorded by both Sunni and Shi'ite sources that Fatima remained angry at Abu Bakr and Umar for what they had done until the day she died. Fatima was buried in the night by Ali without any of Abu Bakr's supporters present and the location of her grave is still disputed.
