Na osnovu propovedi koju šiiti pripisuju Aliju, on je zadržao pravo na vlast u halifatu i rekao sledeće: "Alaha mi, sin Abu Kuhafe (Abu Bakr) se obukao time (halifatom) i zasigurno je znao da je moj položaj u vezi sa time istakao položaj osovine u odnosu na ručni mlin... Podigao sam zavesu naspram halifata i nisam se mešao... Posmatrao sam kako mi otimaju nasleđe sve dok prvi nije otišao, ali je posle sebe predao halifat Ibn al-Hatabu." To pitanje izbora Abu Bakra se i dalje osporava u šiitskom ogranku islama.

According to a sermon attributed by shi'as to Ali, he maintained his right to the caliphate and said: By Allah the son of Abu Quhafah (Abu Bakr) dressed himself with it (the caliphate) and he certainly knew that my position in relation to it was the same as the position of the axis in relation to the hand-mill...I put a curtain against the caliphate and kept myself detached from it... I watched the plundering of my inheritance till the first one went his way but handed over the Caliphate to Ibn al-Khattab after himself. This matter of election of Abu Bakar is still disputed in shia sect of Islam.
