Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Idris ash-Shafi'i (d. 204 A.H./ 820 C.E.)was a descended from the Hashimi family of the Quaraish tribe to which the Holy Prophet belonged.He was born in Gaza, Palestine, and was raised in Makkah, hisparents' home town. He memorized the holy Qur'an while he was still a youngchild. When he reached fifteen, his knowledge was so thorough, Muslim IbnKhalid Al-Zinji, the Mufti of Makkah, told him: "O Abu Abdullah, give fatawa (religious rulings), for by Allah it is time for you to do so!"

Abu Abdulah Muhamed bin Idrisaš-Šafi (umro 204. A.H./ 820. n.e) potekao je iz hešemitske porodice plemena Kurajš kojem je pripadao sveti prorok. Rođen je u Gazi, u Palestini, a odrasto je u Meki, rodnom mestu njegovih roditelja. Naučio je ceo Kuran još dok je bio dečak. Kada je napunio petnaest godina, znanje mu je bilo tako temeljno i Muslim ibn Halidaz-Zindži, mekanski muftija, rekao mu je sledeće: "O, Abu Abddulaše, daj fatvu (religijska pravila) jer je po Alahu trenutak da to učiniš!"
