U terminologiji koja je vladala teorijom arapske književnosti, ilm al-balaga, nauku o besedništvu, sačinjavaju tri ogranka: 1. ilm al-maani, semantika sintakse arapskog jezika, 2. ilm al-bajan, teorija valjanog figurativnog govora i 3. ilm al-badi, preostale forme retoričkog ulepšavanja. In the terminology which dominated Arabic literary theory, elm al-balaga, the science of rhetoric, consisted of three branches: (1) elm al-maani, the semantics of Arabic syntax; (2) elm al-bayan, the theory of figurative speech proper; and (3) elm al-badi, the remaining forms of rhetorical embellishment. Elm al-bayan is usually defined as a theory of the different ways to express a given thought with greater or lesser clarity. Year of publishing: 1756.
