Muhammad was born in the month of Rabi' al-awwal in 570. He belonged to the Banu Hashim clan, one of the prominent families of Mecca, although it seems not to have been prosperous during Muhammad's early lifetime. The Banu Hashim clan was part of the Quraysh tribe. Tradition places the year of Muhammad's birth as corresponding with the Year of the Elephant, which is named after the failed destruction of Mecca that year by the Aksumite king Abraha who had in his army a number of elephants. 20th-century scholarship has suggested alternative dates for this event, such as 568 or 569. Muhamed je rođen meseca rabijulavala 570. Pripadao je klanu Banu Hašim, jednoj od istaknutih porodica u Meki iako izgleda ona nije bila naročito uspešana tokom ranog period Muhamedovog života. Klan Banu Hašim bio je deo plemena Kurejš. Tradicija smešta godinu Muhamedovog rođenja kao godinu slona koja je dobila ime po tome što te godine aksumitski kralj Abraha, koji je u vojsci imao izvestan broj slonova, nije uspeo da uništi Meku. Nauka u dvadesetom veku sugeriše razne datume tog događaja, kao što su 568. i 569. Godina izdavanja: 1489/90.
