Tumači su prihvatili metodologiju koja je bila više zasnovana na transmisiji, rivaji. Dok se Abdalah ibn Abas smatra prvim tumačem Kurana u istoriji islama, u svetlu tradicije bi trebalo da se stekne utisak da Abdalah ibn Masud ima reputaciju u podučavanju Kurana. Muhamed je toliko priznao trud Abdalaha ibn Masuda koji je proučavao Kuran da je drugima preporučivao da uče od njega. O njegovom znanju Ali ibn Abi Talib je rekao sledeće: „On poznaje Kuran i sunu i njegovo znanje je najveće.“

The methodologys adopted by interpreters was based more on transmission, riwaya. While AbdallahIbn Abbas who is considered to be the first exegete in the history of Islam, in the light of the traditions it would seem that AbdallahIbnMas'ud had a reputation in teaching the Qur'an. Muhammad recognised the efforts of AbdallahIbnMasud's learning of the Qur'an, so much so that he recommended others to learn from him. Ali IbnAbiTalib said about his scholarship, "He knows the Qur'an and the Sunnah and his knowledge is the best."
