Reč fetva je arapskog porekla i bukvalno znači mišljenje. Reči koje su u arapskom povezane sa njom jesu afta što znači dati mišljenje i ja stafti što znači tražiti mišljenje. U stvari, u arapskim zemljama se tražiti mišljenje kaže i stifta što je jednostavno drugačiji oblik iste reči. U verskom smislu reč fetva ima brojna značenja. Razlog je to što se musliman, kada traži odgovor na neko pitanje sa islamskog stanovišta, obraća nekom islamskom pravniku sa tim pitanjem a odgovor je poznat kao fetva. Godina izdavanja: 1724/25.

The word fatwa is an Arabic word, and it literally means "opinion". Related words in Arabic are "afta", which means to give an opinion, and "yastafti", which means to ask for an opinion. In fact, in Arabic countries, an opinion poll is called an "istifta", which is simply a different form of the same word. In a religious context, the word "fatwa" carries more meaning. This is because when a Muslim has a question that they need to be answered from an Islamic point of view, they ask an Islamic scholar this question, and the answer is known as a "fatwa".
